More Than Words’ list of hospitals is a comprehensive hospitals database designed to help businesses selling products or services to NHS organisations to reach the right contacts and market to them effectively.
Selling products or services to any public sector organisation can be a challenging task.
Buying cycles (the process a customer takes from finding out about a product to making a purchase) are longer within the public sector and these organisations tend to stick to suppliers that they know.
However, public sector contracts are often long term and high-value – so they are worth the investment.
The NHS was founded in 1948 and, today, is the world’s largest publicly funded health service.
In the UK, healthcare expenditure accounts for 9.6 percent of the GDP. Because the service is publicly funded, there is a long and often complex chain of authority when it comes to making purchasing decisions.
The basic hierarchy within most hospitals is as follows:
- Board members
- Executives (including the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) and Chief Experience Officer (CXO)
- Directors and Department Heads (falling under four main services departments: information services, therapeutic services, diagnostic services and support services)
- Physicians/Service Providers
For marketers, the people at the top of the hierarchy are not always the best people to contact.
Although board members have the most influential voices in their organisation, most procurement decisions are made much further down the chain. According to Google Think Insights, while administrators are responsible for the bulk of a hospital’s purchases, physicians are the top influencers for those decisions.
This creates opportunities for marketers to find and contact relevant marketing targets. But how can you find out where in the hierarchy you should be aiming your own marketing messages?
Our database of hospitals is part of our extensive UK public sector database. When you contact our account manager, we’ll ask you about your business, the types of hospitals you sell to, and the contacts within hospitals of greatest value to you so that we can create a bespoke hospitals contact database.
Your personalised list of hospitals will only contain the contacts that will be the most open to your offers.

List of hospitals FAQ
Do I have to buy the entire list of hospitals?
When asked which hospitals they wish to target, some businesses will respond “how many NHS hospitals are in the UK?!”
But we don’t want to supply you with an exhaustive, untargeted list of hospitals in the UK.
At More Than Words we only want to sell you contact information for the decision-makers who are most likely to need your products or services.
For this reason not only do you not have to buy the entire list of hospitals – we would actually prefer that you didn’t!
Depending on what you are selling, you may want to choose a targeted list of NHS consultants or have us build you an NHS management database.
We often supply targeted, specialist data lists based on location, hospital size and contact job title.

Why direct marketing to hospitals?
The information contained on our list of hospitals is particularly conducive to direct marketing.
Direct marketing is proactive form of advertising used by businesses to contact their target audiences directly with information or offers on their products and services.
Reactive, or indirect, marketing is when you advertise your business and then wait for prospective customers to get in touch. Direct marketing allows you to contact the people you know are most likely to be interested in your products or services with offers that you know will be relevant to them.
Postal marketing to doctors
More Than Words does not currently have a managed service for postal marketing to doctors’ surgeries.
However, our public sector mailing list can be supplied to and used by 3rd party mailing houses if you would like.
Email marketing to hospitals
Doctors and hospital staff are often busy at all hours of the day and night, meaning that they don’t always have time to pay attention to marketing messages immediately.
Email marketing campaigns allow you to distribute valuable, relevant and informative content to public sector email addresses that they can return to when they have more time.
Email marketing is also a simple, low-cost option for any business, even those without much marketing experience.
Marketing platforms like MailChimp and Constant Contact automate email marketing campaigns and provide analytics tools that allow you to A/B test the various elements of your email to refine your campaign over time. If you wish to send your own campaigns, please ask your account manager which platforms we’d recommend you use.
Analytics is a powerful tool for marketers as it helps you to understand which of your contacts is the most interested in the offers you have sent.
Follow up with contacts in order of who opened your email or clicked through the most to make sure that you are devoting your energies to the right prospects.
Telemarketing to hospitals
Many businesses find that persistence is key to breaking into the public sector.
Because of the value of the contracts – and the importance of the services – organisations on your list of hospitals will be looking out for potential suppliers that stand out from the crowd.
One of the best ways to do this is through telemarketing.
At More Than Words our telemarketers make contact with the companies on our public sector calling list to demonstrate value and raise awareness of our clients.
A telephone call is a more memorable and personal way to introduce yourself to a prospect, opening a two-way dialogue that ensures that prospects feel heard and valued.
Telemarketing is also an excellent tool for appointment setting. Asking prospective customers to commit to a small step such as a meeting makes it more likely that they will later convert into customers.

Many of our clients find that a combination of email and telemarketing is the most effective way of generating sales.
Postal marketing to hospitals
More Than Words don’t currently provide a managed postal mail campaign service at this time but our public sector mailing list (of which this is a part) is available to be used by 3rd party mailing houses.
Our database-only service also includes feedback and support from our team for your own, in-house designed direct marketing campaigns.
Selling to hospitals – useful information
The complicated nature of public sector procurement means that an understanding of the process is necessary before you undertake direct marketing to your list of hospitals.
All public bodies are subject to strict rules about how they spend their allocated funds.
If the cost of a purchase is more than £189,330 (as of 2020) then the project will instead go out to public tender but anything under this threshold can be dealt with by the organisation itself.
Nonetheless, there is pressure on NHS trusts and clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) to open opportunities up to the public tender process.
This means businesses that want to work directly with hospitals and organisations need to focus on the benefits of their business, product or service that are most relevant and valuable to their target audience.
It is important to offer innovation to new prospects – new ways for them to save money, meet targets or deliver better care.
Direct marketing is so valuable to businesses selling to the public sector because it can be used to get your target audience to tell you what they need.
Through email, telemarketing or direct mail you can make contact with your chosen contacts and use the information you already know to encourage them to tell you more.
